1. Presentation: “Building Healthier Urban Communities Through Green and Public Spaces” by: H.E. Beng Hong Socheat Khemro, PhD, Director General of Land Management and Urban Planning, MLMUPC
This presentation offers an insightful educational overview of the importance of green and
open spaces for communities. It provides fundamental knowledge about urbanization and
related urban challenges, including urban heat islands, pollution, and urban sprawl. Furthermore, it presents practical examples demonstrating the crucial role of green and public
spaces.
2. Panel Discussion: “Education, Action, and Nature-Based Solutions for a Green City”
Cities globally face shared challenges stemming from urban expansion and climate change.
Critical environmental issues, such as urban heat islands, pollution, and declining physical
and mental well-being, necessitate immediate action. Effective solutions require a deep
understanding of urban development and collaborative participation from grassroots to policy
levels. Integrating plants and trees into buildings, parks, gardens, and urban amenities is
paramount for sustainable development in Phnom Penh and Cambodia. This panel discussion
will provide an educational platform for diverse stakeholders, including government,
academia, business, and youth, to collaboratively share perceptions and experiences for
sustainable urban development and biodiversity enhancement. It will showcase existing
efforts, foster innovation, and empower young people to drive meaningful change.
